MUSIC

ARTIST BIO:

Marco Spiezia, born in Southern Italy and brought up in Cornwall, has etched his creative journey with influences ranging from Mediterranean warmth to the allure of British surf. Growing up surrounded by the melodic musings of Hendrix, Battisti, and Motown tunes, Marco’s passion for music became his life’s rhythm, leading him to craft a distinctive fusion of pop, soul, and swing, enveloped in an irresistible dose of good vibes.

Having embarked on multiple musical ventures as a solo artist and collaborator with other British bands, Marco’s artistic evolution has culminated in a genre-bending sound that blends nuances of soul, pop and easy listening. His latest musical odyssey began in 2009 when he joined forces with Mike Hatton, an accomplished guitarist, and together, they embarked on live performances at Cornwall’s finest beach venues and international festivals.

After dedicating a decade to other projects, including Mojis, Marco Spiezia rekindled his passion for music production. In 2023, he released a series of songs followed by a brand new album that showcased the incredible diversity of his musical psyche. 2024 saw the release of several more singles and EP’s.

It’s feel-good music that hits that sweet spot between pop and soul that leaves listeners with an indelible sense of joy.

This single has come out after years of silence. It was written over 10 years ago but never released. It sets the start of a prolific period. I essentially decided there was no point in keeping all my songs to myself, so with a little courage (and some money saved up… because yes doing music costs a fair bit of money!) I started releasing music again.

In short: When I came back from University in Bangor (North Wales) I was still trying to make Leading To Zenith work (see below), but it was obviously hard given the distance from the rest of the band. That summer we did manage to gig around Cornwall and even play at a Festival in Italy (we went there by Car from Wales… crazy! It was “Balla Coi Cinghiali” festival, we had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Tre Allegri Ragazzi Morti and Zibba amongst others, who I later found out were pretty big names in the Italian independent scene). After that summer things got difficult with the band so I recorded some stuff with a new bunch of musicians, but only did a few gigs in Cornwall and the project pretty much finished there. I had a period of stillness and started digging up some acoustic tracks I had. By chance Dario Villa (accorgitene), a friend of Lorenzo, my guitarist from L2Z, came to visit me in Cornwall. He heard Scaramouche by chance and loved; he asked me to record it asap so he could propose it to a few people in the music industry. The story is long here, but in essence Dario tried to help me for about 4 years. In 2011 we released the EP Smile, funded by him. During this period I gigged extensively with Michael Hatton (who seriously supported me through the whole way and was a key member of this band), my brother Francesco and a few other friends (including Olly Bayliss and Chris Keeling) across Cornwall (including Relentless Boardmasters) and Italy. When I relocated to Italy I ended up playing with 2 new musicians (Luca Taurmino and Danilo Asturi) who were taught the songs and who I eventually took up back to Cornwall to record the album with Hatton at the iconic Sawmills Studios (which was funded by Gianfranco Clerici  from ScreenPlay and still overseen/supported immensely by Dario Villa). We released Life In Flip-Flops a few years after in 2015. After several changes in the band I gigged southern Italy for another year (mainly with Floro Pappalardo and Fulvio De Nocera), then I decided to take a little break and change style of music, and MOJIS happened…

In short: I found myself often speaking about music with Ivan Esposito, who I shared a fair bit of time with since my arrival in Sorrento. He was a music fanatic too and also played the drums in earlier years of his life. When the Flip Flops project started quieting down he expressed his interest in starting up something. So I took up the opportunity and dug up some old rock songs I had never released. I knew a bass player who had played a few gigs with me – Stefano Romano – so one day I rang him up and asked if he wanted to be part of the project. It turned out that he also had a brother (Francesco) who played the guitar very well. We went to a trial rehearsal at their place in Arco Felice and the rest is history. Some real magic happened on that day, the songs took life immediately, so we decided to start practicing more. We started off playing covers in pubs and in the mean time the song list for the album grew. In the end I decided to self fund the album and off we went to record. About a year later (and many sleepless nights!) Migrations came out in April 2017.

In short: this was my University band and my first ever record label contract. We started off playing in a band called IF (because the guitarist was a guy in his 40’s called Ian Fuller), made by me, Lorenzo Luzzani (guitars), Tom Hird (bass and turds) and Robert Farrow (drums and potatoes). We kept playing until Ian left and eventually changed direction, created Leading To Zenith and recorded the album with Danny Garrod (Drums, later replaced for the tour by Owain Gruff), Kieran Tonra (keyboards), Jamie Burne (bass) and of course Lorenzo. When we went to Anglesey to record the album the guy from the studio liked it and proposed us a record deal! It wasn’t much, and we did paid for the whole recording, but it was still pretty cool as an experience. We did a tour around UK which also ended up in the North of Italy.. the rest of the story is linked with the Life in Flip-flops album above.
